I Love Nicole Ritchie's New Jewelry Line

This lovely lady has transformed herself from Paris Hilton's slightly chubby, badly dressed friend to a fashion savvy media mogul mom. Props to Nicole Ritchie for her swift 180 from her train wreck celebrity status. Her has-been celebrity gravestone will no longer read, "Here lies Nicole Ritchie. A talentless socialite whose only contribution was showing off bad hair extensions".

And thank god for her revamped style and taste because she has bestowed upon us a beautifully funky, eclectic and reasonably priced jewelry collection. Her mixture of metals, stones and leather makes for a fashion forward vision. The angular shapes she (and her team I am sure:) have decided upon, give an almost Native American feel with an 80's rocker vibe. All of these pieces make for great gifts this season because they are definitely the right price and they are all available on-line so they are super easy to purchase!

Let's hope that the Paris/Nicole friendship can withstand the pressure of Nicole's rising fashion star to Paris's tacky, oh so 90's unfortunate wardrobe. Oy.

Proper Peep Toe Pump Style

Here is the truth folks: Peep toe pumps are the ONLY open-toed shoe that this stylist feels is appropriate to wear all year long. That's right, put away your toes. I don't care how perfectly polished and buffed they may be, I don't want to see them once the thermometer drops below 65 degrees. When is the last time you walked outside barefoot through the snow? Well that is exactly the concept when you walk out in your strappy summer heels for a December holiday party!!!! Honestly, I am trying to save you from frostbite.

The key to making the peep toe pump work all year is to buy a pair that has a smaller opening. I am talking one, maybe two toes saying hello here. Pair them with an opaque or textured tight as long as the seem around your toes is tucked under your foot. Viewable seem equals old lady status. Seeing a stocking/open-toe shoe combo always makes me a little queasy. I am currently taking a deep breath right now to ease the pain.

Go Grecian This Holiday Season

Here we go again. Overwhelming crowds of people, "Jingle Bell Rock" for the 50th time and just one more cookie, make this season oh so merry. Oh stop your complaining, put on a cocktail dress and have another eggnog, it's holiday time!

Just because dressing up is so much fun, holiday party season is quite possibly my favorite time of year. And to celebrate this fabulous ritual of overeating while trying to look amazing, I am going to feature multiple styles of dresses for multiple ages and body types this chilly December. Get ready to look good stuffing your face.

Obviously this dress is not going to fit a whole lotta Christmas cookies, but it is definitely a great look that will set you apart from your fellow cocktail cohorts. Best for those who are slender or curvy in all the right places with a smaller mid-section, this dress is sexy yet appropriate. The color is not blarring, the rouching will slighly mask any lower stomach issues and the empire silouette will provide a proper space and hold for your "ladies". Adding bold, extra large earrings (don't mess with this neckline) and a cuff or cocktail ring will knock this look out of the park. An up-do with a braid here or there will solidify you as a greek goddess. Feel comfortable and confident singing "Fa la la la la, la la la la...." all the way to your eighth glass of egg nog.

Recession Proof Style Made Easy

Seriously, I know that there is every type of shopping website out there these days and it makes it nearly impossible to choose one that has everything you want. I am not just talking beautiful items here ladies, I am talking about sales. Sales on shoes, sales on purses, sales at Gucci, sales at the Gap.... You are getting the idea.

When I found out about Shopittome.com, I went to sale (fashion) heaven. Shopping is truly a personal experience, but shopping on-line seems to take away that very important aspect. American Music Awards Best Dress

I am almost embarrassed, ashamed even. I am picking a Disney princess as my best-dressed of the night at the American Music Awards. Let me at least defend myself before you judge me and lose all hope in my abilities and taste as a fashion stylist.

This entire look is perfectly put together and represents her style and age. I hate, hate, hate when these little starlets try and look older than they are. Embrace your young status, you only have it once! Be sophisticated yet fun and youthful, you can be!

This particular outfit is fabulous. It is appropriately sexy, playful and different. The silhouette is feminine yet the tool overlay with funky appliques and bias cut add the rock and roll touch that separate her from the fashion pack. Adding the layered bracelets and round toe pumps keep it more laidback and accessibly cool. The cherry on top of the sundae of her outfit is her side ponytail keeping it loose and not to formal. Damn you Ashley Tisdale, you win!

Suit Up Ladies! Covered Up Sex Appeal.

I am so happy the world is over Britney Spears. Yea, we all wish for a comeback, just to save us all from the train wreck, but her "naked" style should stay out of the spotlight. O. V. E. R.

Sexiness is about how you "wear" your look, not how much cleavage you put on the table.... Or crack for that matter. Menswear on women can be the most seductive style that is also wearable. Whether you are Charlize Theron at 5'11" or me at 5'4", the pant/vest/jacket combo will put you on the best dressed list every time.

Quite simply, this look should be fitted or you WILL look like you are wearing your boyfriend's clothing. That is not sexy unless you are going to grab him a beer and you are tucked safely away at home. Make sure to leave the shirt un-buttoned just one too many so the sex appeal is just an accidental slip away. You understand ladies, it is all about the possibility of what lies beneath and not actually showing it all!!! Classy sexy will get you what you want. Relationship advice from a very single stylist. Ok, maybe not your best source, but at least I will have you looking hot!

Shop this Designer at Retail Prices: Victor Alfaro

I love finding a new designer that rocks my fashion world. I am out here in Chicago, shopping in the burbs no less, but that is where my favorite insider fashion finds always appear!

You already know Target is a leader in recruiting great designers to create brilliant pieces at economical prices. Obviously their marketing team does a great job of letting us all know of that. Yet, what about all of the other "middle America" department stores trying to follow in their footsteps?

It is true that I have luke warm feelings at best for the shopping experience at Carson Pirie Scott.... That is until today! What the hell is going on there? And who is Victor Alfaro!?! He is my new favorite affordable (when shopping at Carson's) designer, that's who!

Check out this amazing outfit and other pieces just like it at the department store you forgot about....or never even heard of in the first place. Cashmere sweaters for $70? Hell yah! I love his basic designs with the opportunity for funk when styled correctly.

Please love your local department store for the hidden gems it may hold. Eyes open, wallets ready, your next great purchase is just a swipe of a credit card away!

I Hate Pleather Leggings

Seriously people. What pissed off stylist told their clients that it would be awesome to wear pleather leggings to their next luncheon meeting at the Ivy? Please save us all. I know I always talk about things that I love, but dear God, put down the fat emphasizing, ass hugging, stupidly shiny pleather legging. Barf.

And to make matters worse, this pair has decided to go stirrup style and add an open toe summer heel. This stylist should be fired and sent to a small island off the coast of some god-forbidden country I have never heard of. Have I made my point?

No matter how fabulous your thighs may be, adding a layer of pleather will not reap any compliments you may have been hoping for from your supposedly fashionable friends. If they were true friends, if they were fashionable friends, they would tell you to back away from the pleather... Don't walk, RUN.

Where not to buy these Kova and T Oxy Leggings
$115.00.... Yea, seriously.

The Personal Side of Styling

A very reliable source (my friend and lover of blogs), said it was time to get a little more personal with my audience. I have a "vomit mouth of information" in my real life, so this shouldn't be too difficult for me.

Why a picture of the Chicago theater you ask? I am going there way to early in the AM to go see my clients in Chicago. I love my personal clients, it is like I get to be stylish and a shrink at the same time. My friends joke that they have no idea why people love to tell me their entire personal lives. I have had my clients to randoms in bars tell me the most ridiculous things. I eat it up.

I used to live in Chicago for three years so I keep my regular clients and have picked up tons of new ones along the way. I do lots of press in Chicago. Google it yo. I have a junior stylist who works out there for me when I am not around. I get to go and hang out with my friends who still live there and make lots of money all in one fail swoop. It is like a great convertible, no overhead.

I swear I will try my best to post at least one great style tip a day, but please still love me if I slip up. I am a busy bee trying to make the benjamins...... A girl needs to pay for her shopping habit:)

Watch HGTV's "Hidden Potential"? You Should, I Style it!

Stylish Winter Coats

The weather outside may be frightful, but at least you don't have to look it. For those of us living in the colder parts of the world, we may complain (a lot), but as far as style goes, layer on the fabulousness!

Never underestimate the power of a phenomenal winter coat. Just like an amazing bag, it is an investment piece. You will wear it repeatedly so the breakdown cost is really not that bad. Seriously people, this piece goes on OVER your entire outfit so it IS the outfit... at least while you are outside. Make it stupendous. Yes, I said stupendous.

Last year I bought the most expensive coat I have ever purchased. It was $600 and I think I threw up a little in my mouth when I bought it, but damn, was that thing worth it! I wore it all of the time as it was most warm coat and everyone from homeless people to my higher end clients raved about its obvious beauty. There is no way you are going to see me swipe my card for $600 if I don't think the world is going to fall over backwards to tell me how awesome I look:)

This winter coat is by my favorite coat designer, Mackage. He is brilliant. He manages to combine functionality and design to perfection. Most of his coats have this higher collar which allows you to ditch the scarf. Ah, one less thing to carry. All of the designs always skim your body often having some sort of exquisite belt. His work is all in the details and definitely never has you saying, "boring!". An investment piece? Yes. Might you regurgitate your lunch a bit when you purchase it? Probably. Is it worth it? Hell yah!!!!!!!!

P.S. A lot of times Mackage coats are also available at Loehmans for half the price! Search my fair shopping friends!

The Pencil Skirt

If you venture back in fashion time (think Marty McFly, only you're driving a prius), you will find that the pencil skirt is a tried and true staple of the woman's wardrobe. Anything that has stuck around since the fifties must have some merit! The simple explanation for this phenomenon is that this style skirt truly does work on most body types and creates a flattering silhouette.

As I have repeatedly said, accentuating the smaller parts of your body is a great concept... Obviously! Moderately high waisted garments are very complimentary to the "real woman's" body. This means, don't have the waist line just below your chest, think more like your belly button. The straight skirt hugs your curves in all of the right places accentuating your feminitity. Women should have a heiny so show it off:)

There are two important factors to make this style work. First is to have it hemmed to the appropriate length. As this skirt shows, the hem should be just above your knee otherwise you are actually shortening and fattening your bottom half. Uh, not the look you are going for ladies! Second, the fabric should be a denser material, it might even have some elasticity to it. This allows the skirt to hug your curves accentuating the positive rather than showing off any possible, um, let's be real here... cellulite. Ug, the unforgivable word!

As this particular look shows, the pencil skirt is great for day into evening and can be perfect for your next big meeting or dinner party. Throw on a bold statment necklace and look like the MILF (or MILF in training) you have always wanted to be.

White After Labor Day? Why Not!?!

When people ask me about "rules" of fashion, I try and remind them that rules are made to be broken. The truth of great fashion is being able to make something work and making the improbable the next great trend. Be your own trendsetter, but remember that being outside of the box does not always equal fashion icon. Choose your battles carefully and remember that the greatest fashion compliment ever is to make something work that most people would not estimate goes together. That is the sign of true style genius.

White after Labor Day is not always a faux pas when done correctly. As Kate Beckinsale is stylishly showing, adding dark accent pieces is a good way to break up the overabundance of clean white that this look could have. The problem with white after Labor Day isn't the color, it is the summer feeling that it evokes. By adding edgier accessories in black, she is changing the whole tone of this flowy, white cocktail dress. One of the most important factors of wearing this angelic froc so late in the season is the weight and density of the fabric. Choosing a cotton blend adds for breathability which is associated with a hot summer day. November isn't known for its heat waves, but this silky material makes this dress winter appropriate.

Darken up your make-up with a smokey eye and you are ready for any winter wonderland. When anybody asks about your wonderful, white frock you can just tell them, "Now you see
I'm breaking all the rules, breakin' all the rules." I am sure Ozzy Ozbourne never thought he would be used in a fashion quote.... He does love the smokey eye make-up though....

My University Featured Me! I Must Be Big:)

So it appears that my parents hard-earned money has finally been put to good use. I am sure they are overflowing with pride since my alma mater, Northeastern University, has featured their fair daughter as a success story. Please share in their joy by checking out the article:)

Lauren Conrad's Ring Rocks

Oh Lauren, you may be miserable because all of your "friends" on The Hills keep walking all over you (except Whitney, I love Whitney:), but chipper up, you have a name ring! You have individually brought back the possibly cheesy, borderline tacky name ring, and you have done it will style.

If you watch closely, all of the other little Hills girls have now copied her (Audrina much?) and are rocking the same ring.... Of course they were smart enough to put their own names on it. Thank god. I will admit, I too love this look and of course would not be promoting it to you as a saint of style if I did not believe in it. And to think, not only will you secretly be promoting the continued production of the very real show "The Hills" by wearing this ring, but you will never forget your own name again. After a long night of drinking, anything is possible. With the partying these girls do on the show, maybe that is the real reason for this new, hot accessory.....

Make your own name ring!

Look Like a First Lady: Michelle Obama Style!

With a new presidency comes a new look and I'm not just talking politics here... Now I love myself a good pantsuit, but if I have to see one more badly dressed woman walk through the doors of the White House I am going to add a proposition to the next election ballot: First ladies much have stylists.

Truthfully, it is well-known that Michelle Obama does not have a stylist (although I am certainly up for the task!) It is true, she does falter here and there, but overall her taste is that of a future first lady. She exemplifies chic sophistication with an overall ore of accessibility that we haven't seen, well, ever. There will be no $150,000 shopping sprees at Neimans on this side of political town.

To acheive this look is quite simple. Political chic always starts with the right jewelry. A short strand necklace portrays class, elegance and appropriate aristocracy. You are of the people, but just happen to look better than them:) By Michelle using this turquoise color for her accent piece she acheives an extra stylish look instead of stuffy.

The blazer is a flattering style that cinches at her waist accentuating one of the smallest parts of her body. Can we say "boxy blazer" bad, cinched and fitted blazer good. It also has a trendy safari-like feel yet stays under the "blazer" heading which constitutes a more professional feel. Thank you to our new first lady for not only bringing class and elegance to the White House, but a kick ass new style that I am sure will only get better (just like her husband's presidency) over these next four years.... YES WE CAN (bring style back).

The "Eat Your Heart Out" Dress

Honestly you say, what is Amy talking about? I am talking about your fashion dream! A dress that you can literally eat your heart out and look just as hot at the end of the meal as you looked at the beginning. A look for the bloated fabulous, think Thanksgiving here people! The "You want to ask me about my career, love life and general direction in life, but you are so mesmerized by my dress" dress.

The empire waist is your friend. You new best friend. It accentuates one of the smaller parts on your body, just under the bust. This also leaves room for you to enjoy all of the delicious food in life because the loose flow of the bottom half gives you a body conscious silhouette without hugging your "curves" unnecessarily.

This particular dress is fabulous because not only is it empire, but it also has a bold knot drawing the eye to the center. This style is what I like to refer to as "skinifying". Basically, you become a skinny bitch pretty quick once you throw on this comfy jersey material dress!

The finale of this great piece is that you can dress it up or dress it down with the quick change of a shoe (boot or heel) and the addition of an opaque tight or fishnet. Turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, apple pie and pumpkin pie never tasted (or looked) so good.

Newsboy Caps Aren't Just for the Paperboy

Here's a unisex look that doesn't just hide a bad hair day, but ADDS to your overall look. This stylish cap is one of my favorites for hats because of its ability to cross all barriers. Any age, any race, any sex can wear this cute and functional piece. It easily squeezes into a bag if you are seriously just wearing it for warmth, but why waste such a great looking hat! It works indoors and outdoors. Women, add a bold hoop to make this possibly male accessory more feminine.

For those days that fabulous style seems impossible (hungover much?), here is the answer to your (lack of sleep) dreams. Now go and have a bloody mary and look good doing it.

Your Best Accessory: Nail Polish

All great stylists will tell you that any amazing outfit is all in the details. One wrong shoe, one wrong belt, and you will have fallen from fashion royalty to fashion victim.

Obviously this picture is beautifully styled and has layers upon layers that I could talk about. Her sculptured hat, her velvet rose choker... Look closer. It's like the "Where's Waldo" of style....

Nail Polish! Every week when I get my nails done it is like I am choosing who to transform into. The vampy seductress with ruby red, the rocker chic with florescent pink or the classic goth girl with dark blackish red? Lately deep purple is my winter choice.

Remember that everything you choose from your clothes to your hair to your nails helps to define your look, your style. This week I am going to try out my flirty, innocent side with Essie's ballet slipper.... I don't think flirty and innocent will last much into the weekend, but at least my nails will look good:)

Cocktail Rings

I own 20. Okay, 25. Alright, if I am being honest with myself it may be more like 30.... I just can't help myself, who doesn't want a piece of jewelry that says don't mess with my bling! Gone are the days of subdued jewelry and here are the days of over-sized fantastic fabulousness.

Cocktail rings, just like these by Kenneth Jay Lane, are an easy way to put that stamp of style on any outfit. They are a stand alone piece, meaning that it only takes one to complete an entire look. Stop fidgeting with other jewelry and and take the easy way out this time. Just like the LBD, it is a sure fire item. If the size is overwhelming and you need a little hand holding to get into this trend, try the clear stone or something a little less flashy. You can do it, I promise:) Plus, if you end up in a street alley in a west side story type of scenario, it doubles as weaponry. Leave the mace at home, this stylish item serves double duty.

School Girl Chic

Why is the Catholic school girl look always appealing to both men and women when I am sure it evokes a fountain of emotion? Don't ask me, I am a Jewish girl. Seriously though, women see a possibility to look sophisticated and chic while men's brains are automatically drifting south....

As a stylist (and part-time shrink) I will venture to put forth the concept that you can have it all with this classic look. Sex appeal and respect in the boardroom. Obviously a few changes must be made to the typical school girl look in order to accomplish this.

This particular outfit is perfectly pairing together all of the ideals we hope for out of school girl chic. The plaid skirt is bold and an appropriate length. Adding the tights not only creates warmth, but adds an office ready aspect by covering bare legs. The yellow sweater is the pop of color necessary to make you stand out. Pairing it with an un-tucked white button down creates depth and loosens up the rigid feeling this look could have. The beret, layered pearls and loafer style heels are the stylish additions that compliment the overall feel of the always appealing school girl look. Never go to the principal's office again (at least not for bad style).

Feather in my Hat. Fabulous.

Am I Angelina Jolie in Changeling? NO, but at least I can mimic her style. I love, love, love anything fabulous and feathers definitely fall under that category. As I have noted before (I am sure you remember because you memorize my blog), hats, gloves and scarves are the best way to spice up your winter look. A throwback to the early 1900's with this classic winter hat keep you warm and stylish. Functionable fashion people! Add a brazen red lipstick, plumper included, and Maddox might just mistake you for mom. Brad not included.

The Longer Blazer

Waist length or cropped has been the only style to surface in recent years, but the longer blazer is making a comeback! Kind of like John Travolta, only way cooler. The big difference this time around is that designers have finally realized that if you make a garment this long, it must fit you properly. Remove shoulder pads, add darts. For this great piece to not overwhelm you, no matter what you size, it must skim the body. If you have a larger heiny, do not wear this. It will actually, just like tying a cardigan around your waist, accentuate the not so positive. It skims your body just until the point where it hits your bum where it then juts out. Not a good look.

Gwyneth Paltrow, a true fashion icon, is showing how a simple blazer can tone down the look of any outfit. Even her friend Madonna's old "Like a Virgin" dress:) I actually own a dress that is quite similar, but it is not for the fashion faint of heart. Own it, your look that is.

Pretty Political Pearls

In light of the election, I think it is time that we all step up to the plate and rock a little Jackie O style. Because ladies, classic never fades. Whether you are Republican or Democrat, this style is an instant pick me up for anyone. Like everything I discuss, it is all about making it your own!

Personally, I was never the individual pearl strand type of gal. And if you are no Charlotte from Sex and the City either, why not choose a strand that is either long or layer them up. Classicly funky never looked so good. Pin a small broach on your pearls for a personal touch or just buy a set, like these fabulous ones, that already have your flair built right in. Jackie O, 2008.

The Ruffle Blouse

Remember the pirate shirt from Seinfeld? Well this isn't it. Adding a little bit of a costume effect to your outfit does not have to imply that you are putting an eye patch on and shipping off to sea. The rouched blouse can add that something extra to your outfit. From day wear, to office wear to evening wear, this is the fashion punch you are looking for.

This particular style is basic and fun. A garment that cinches at the waist is always your friend because it exemplifies your smallest area, your waist. In addition, the cinched wrist draws attention to another delicate feature. Are we seeing a thinning pattern here? The detail down the middle draws the eye to the center, also a slenderizing concept. Add the high collar which makes this shirt easy to pair with a vest or a blazer and all in all, you just got your perfect pirate shirt. Eat your heart out Seinfeld.

Lovely Long Leather Gloves

This is one of the most fabulous winter accessories a lady can own. Too often not enough attention is paid to the details and that is where you can really set yourself apart. This is also the most inexpensive way to change up the foundation pieces of your wardrobe. Buy the basic, yet beautifully constructed, winter coat and add your own style through different gloves, hats and scarves. Long gloves add a sexy throwback to a time when fashion was exquisite at all times. Not to mention that they actually keep you warmer because they cover your arms! Never ask again what to do with your 3/4 length sleeves. If it is not too chilly, add them to a blazer and tuck the sleeve in. Add a scarf and poof, you are a stand-out style icon! Never forget that fun neutral colors are always the more interesting choice. This bronze rouched glove is classic, funky and stylish all at the same time. Love them.
